Cather’s vision is that ALL students will take active roles in obtaining academic success in a nurturing environment where literacy provides the educational foundation, and literature and writing is the common thread for all teaching and learning. A strong academic press will challenge students to reach their fullest potential and prepare them to take their places as productive citizens in a highly technological, multi-cultural society.

To accomplish our vision: Cather School commits to the collaborative involvement of all stakeholders to provide high quality instruction in all subject areas with literature and writing as the common thread, on-going staff development, technology infusion, and a safe and nurturing learning environment for ALL students.

SCHOOL PROFILE

Willa Cather Elementary School is located at 2908 West Washington Boulevard, Chicago, Illinois 60612. Cather is a Literature and Writing Magnet Cluster School with high academic standards serving students in grades K-8. Our school is a Track E school that prides itself in achieving 7 straight years of academic improvement in 2008, and having the highest Illinois State Achievement Test gains in the City of Chicago in 2007. We are a small nurturing school with a total student enrollment of 260 students. We offer our students academic supports through Focused Instruction Process, Head Start Program, Technology Labs, after-school programs, Saturday School Enrichment, Read to Succeed and parent workshops. Cather believes that excellence is not the goal, it is the standard for our students.
